The bones of Cupertino are 1950s and 60s ranch homes on flat, workable lots — modest houses that have had a lot of money spent around them since. Rancho Rinconada is small postwar homes, many of them already expanded once. Fairgrove is an Eichler tract with its own look to answer to, post and beam and glass and no attic to run anything through. Monta Vista is older and more mixed, closer to the foothills, with narrower streets and lots that start to fall away. The common problem across all of it is the same: the kitchen is closed off and undersized for how the family actually lives, and there is one bathroom doing work meant for two.
Because families here do not want to give up the address, the money goes into the house instead of into a move. That means whole home remodels, second stories where the block and the framing allow it, and outright rebuilds on lots where the existing house is not worth saving. It also means a lot of multigenerational planning — a bedroom and full bath on the ground floor for a parent, or a detached ADU in the back yard so grandparents are close but have their own door. We get asked for that combination in Cupertino more than almost anywhere else we work.

Questions we get in Cupertino
Can we stay in the house during a whole home remodel?
For a true whole home remodel, usually not, and we would rather say so up front than have you find out the hard way with no kitchen and no working bathroom. Sometimes we can phase it so you keep one end of the house livable. On a kitchen or a single bathroom, most families stay put with a temporary setup.
Is it smarter to add a second story or tear down and rebuild?
It depends on the foundation, the existing framing, and how much of the current layout you actually want to keep. Some of these 1950s Cupertino houses take a second story well. Others end up with so much reinforcement and rework that a rebuild gets you a better house for similar effort. We look at the real conditions and give you an honest read rather than selling you the bigger job.
Can you build an ADU for my parents in the back yard?
Yes, and it is a common ask here. Detached in the rear yard, attached off the house, or a garage conversion — each one fits a different lot. If it is for aging parents, we build the bathroom and doorways with that in mind from the drawings, not as an afterthought.
