Custom Cabinets & Finish Carpentry

Cabinets, built-ins and trim work built for your house, not ordered from a catalog. We do this work in-house — it is the part of the trade this company was built around.

A lot of cabinet work in this trade gets subcontracted out. Ours does not. We build them, we install them, and the same company is accountable if a door sits proud or a run does not meet the wall right. It also means we are not stuck fitting a stock 33-inch box into a 34-inch opening and filling the rest with a strip of matching wood.

That matters more here than it would somewhere with newer housing. South Bay homes are largely mid-century and older, and they have the quirks to prove it — walls that are out of plumb, floors that run downhill, plaster over lath, chimney chases and heater closets sitting exactly where you want a pantry. A custom run gets scribed to the house as it actually is. It is also usually the only honest answer when a client wants to keep the character of an original built-in but needs it to work for how they live now.

What’s included

  • Field measurement of the actual openings, walls and floors — not a takeoff from the plan set
  • Kitchen cabinets built to the run you have, including odd corners, appliance panels and cabinets built up to the ceiling
  • Bath vanities, medicine cabinets and linen storage sized for small mid-century bathrooms
  • Built-in bookcases, window seats, entertainment walls and fireplace surrounds
  • Home office desks, wall units and closet build-outs
  • Mudroom benches, cubbies and laundry cabinets, including tight side-door entries in older homes
  • Doors, casing, base, crown and stair trim matched to the existing profiles in the house
  • Repair and rebuild of original built-ins that are worth keeping, and replacement of the ones that are not

Why R Twyns Construction

We are a family-run licensed general contracting and remodeling company (CSLB #896811), building in the South Bay since 2007. Tim Reynolds owns the company and his VP Ben runs the work, so the people who price your job are the people who are on it. The cabinets and finish carpentry come out of our own shop, which is what an older house needs when nothing in it is square. And we tell you what a job actually involves before you commit to it — the load-bearing wall, the drain line, the permit — rather than after the walls are open.

Common questions

Why go custom instead of buying stock or semi-custom?
Fit and use of space, mostly. Stock cabinets come in fixed widths, so an odd wall gets made up with filler strips. Custom means the run fills the wall and the interior is laid out for what you actually store. In a small older kitchen, the few inches you get back from not using fillers are real inches.
Can you match the existing woodwork in our house?
Usually, yes. We match profiles on casing, base and crown, and we work to match species and finish on a new built-in going next to original work. An exact match on aged wood is not always achievable and we will say so up front rather than after it is installed. Sometimes the better answer is a deliberate contrast instead of a near-miss.
Do you only do cabinets as part of a bigger remodel?
No. We do standalone work — a built-in wall, a replacement vanity, a set of bookcases, a laundry room. Plenty of our cabinet work happens inside a kitchen or ADU project, but it does not have to.
What is the lead time?
It depends on the size of the job and what is in the shop when you sign. Because the work stays in-house, we control that schedule instead of waiting on a supplier, and we will give you a date once we know the scope. We would rather tell you a real date late than a comfortable one early.
Can I see what it will look like before you build it?
Yes. We work through layout and elevations with you before anything gets cut, and we go over door style, hardware and finish samples. Changes are cheap on paper and expensive in the shop, so we spend the time there first.
